Avril Lavigne Denies Ripping Off The Song That Sounds Like Hers
It's clear to everyone that the only things Avril Lavigne has ever ripped off are her name and wardrobe - from the French word for April and Wee Jimmy Krankie respectively - because Avril Lavigne certainly doesn't rip off any old songs.
That's what Avril Lavigne has said on her website, anyway. Avril Lavigne is currently being sued by the songwriter from forgotten 1970s band The Rubinoos because he says that the "Hey! Hey! You! You! I don't like your girlfriend" bit from Avril's hit single Girlfriend was stolen from the "Hey! Hey! You! You! I wanna be your boyfriend" bit from Rubinoos song I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. But the new statement on Avril Lavigne's website means that she's ready to take on The Rubinoos as hard as she can, possibly settling the score with a gum-chewing match or by seeing who's married to the most rubber-faced member of a pretend punk boyband. Or something.
Pop music as we know it has been around for more than 50 years, and so it's inevitable that, from time to time, some songs are going to sound a little bit like other songs. That's why people sue Beyonce for stealing songs and people sue Britney Spears for stealing songs and founding members of The Rubinoos sue Avril Lavigne while claiming that her annoying song Girlfriend was directly ripped off from their song I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend.
Last week, founding Rubinoo Tommy Dunbar filed a lawsuit against Avril Lavigne because of perceived similarities between Girlfriend and I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. And understandably Avril Lavigne is upset by this claim. Not only does an accusation of plagiarism put Avril Lavinge's booze-loving, paparazzi-spitting, big house-dwelling, weird looking man-marrying lifestyle in danger, but it also compromises Avril Lavigne's reputation as a songwriter. And God knows how important it is for Avril to maintain her standing as the woman who came up with the line "She's like so whatever." So that's why Avril Lavigne has fired off a warning shot to The Rubinoos from her website. Avril writes:
You may have heard some news that two guys who wrote for some band from the 1970s I have never in my life heard of called the "Rubinoos" are trying to sue me. They have a song called "I Want To Be Your Boyfriend" that has no musical similarities to the song "Girlfriend" that Luke Gottwald and I wrote together. They claim that a small part of the lyrics are the same and are saying that I took these from them. I had never heard this song in my life and their claim is based on 5 words! All songs share similar lyrics and emotions. As humans we speak one language.
Well, no, Avril. As humans we speak many different languages. English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian - those are literally just a few of the languages that as humans we speak. There are more. Maybe you were thinking about dogs instead of humans. They do look alike, we'll admit, especially when you dress them up as little furry sailors. Anyway, your confused theory on language isn't the point here.
Although the great Avril Lavigne Vs The Rubinoos Hey! Hey! You! You! lawsuit smackdown won't go to court until next month, Avril Lavigne's manager has already got a musicologist to deny any similarities between the songs. But that hasn't stopped Avril's fans from taking to YouTube to create videos suggesting that maybe The Rolling Stones should just sue everyone instead.
